The flight left Rio for Porto Alegre with stopovers in São Paulo and Curitiba. On beginning its descent to Congonhas airport, in SP, on a night approach in bad weather, the L-18 LodeStar went around and began a circuit for a new attempt. It was heard passing over the airport, low, but completely off the runway centreline. The engines stopped and the aircraft fell into the Pedra Branca woods, in Santo André, SP, killing all 15 occupants, among them captain Ismael Guilherme and co-pilot Walter Seibel.
