Air Delta Airlines Flight 79 is a regular seasonal flight of the company Delta Air Lines from Václav Havel Airport (PRG) to John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York. The route was operated by a Boeing 767-300ER registered N175DN, which was 33 years old at the time of the flight.
On Friday 1 September 2023 at 12:33, shortly after take-off from Ruzyně airport from runway 24, a fault occurred in the right engine; this was possibly caused by a collision of the aircraft with birds (a so-called bird strike) or simply by wear and the age of the material. The problems were also indicated by thick black smoke coming out of the engine.
The captain declared an emergency and after 20 minutes landed the aircraft back on runway 24. After landing he waited on the runway for the arrival of the Prague airport firefighters and the emergency services; after approx. 35 minutes the aircraft taxied off the main runway with the assistance of the firefighters, thanks to which operations were restored. The passengers did not have to be evacuated and left by the standard route. Firefighters from six stations from Prague and the Central Bohemian Region were also on standby.
A total of three flights were diverted: EK 139, LH 1690 and FI 536. All of these flights were diverted to Dresden (DRS). After refuelling they continued back to Prague airport.
