Engine failure after takeoff

Records where an engine failure or loss of power was the defining event and it came during the initial climb. With little height and speed there are few choices: land ahead, or try to turn back to the runway, a manoeuvre that pilots are trained to be wary of below a safe height.

Phases of flight are coded for NTSB records from 1982, so this collection starts there. Failures during the takeoff roll itself are in the explorer under the Takeoff phase.
