China Eastern Airlines Flight 765 accident

The China Eastern Airlines Flight 765 accident refers to the event on 24 May 2017 in which China Eastern Airlines flight 765 from Nanjing to Hong Kong overran runway 25R while landing at Hong Kong International Airport, with its nose wheel and one main wheel touching the grass.

The Hong Kong Fire Services Department received the report and stood by at the scene. At around 12 noon that day, a spokesperson for the Airport Authority Hong Kong confirmed that the north runway had to be closed because of the incident and that no one had so far been injured; the north runway was closed for nearly 2 hours.. During the closure of the north runway, affected flights included Mandarin Airlines flight AE981 from Kaohsiung to Hong Kong, which was forced to turn back on reaching the skies over Hong Kong; HK Express flight UO3155 from Hualien to Hong Kong, which circled over Hong Kong ten times before landing; and Cathay Dragon flight KA863 from Nanjing to Hong Kong, which diverted to Guangzhou and arrived in Hong Kong 6 hours late.

Course of the accident

When the airliner landed, weather conditions at Hong Kong airport were poor, with heavy precipitation, and the Hong Kong Observatory had even issued a Black Rainstorm Warning Signal. The first landing attempt failed; on the second, before the aircraft landed, air traffic control told the captain that the surface wind was 16 knots from 20 degrees east of north. After being cleared to land on runway 25R, the airliner was to turn off the runway promptly at taxiway A4 and turn left at the second exit into taxiway B. However, the airliner was unable to do so. A few seconds later air traffic control reminded the airliner to leave the runway as soon as possible at taxiway A3, at which point the airliner reported that it had skidded on the runway. Air traffic control immediately instructed the following KLM flight KL887 to go around in accordance with the normal missed approach procedure, and it landed on the south runway 16 minutes later.
