An-12 crash near Ivanovo (1982)

The An-12 crash near Ivanovo was an aviation accident involving an An-12BK aircraft of the Soviet Air Force that occurred on Tuesday, 16 November 1982, in Ivanovo Oblast near Severny airfield (Ivanovo), killing 7 people.

Crash

The aircraft, from the 610th Centre for Combat Employment and Retraining of Flight Personnel, was performing a training flight. It was flown by a crew of seven, whose commander was Lieutenant Colonel V. A. Polushkin, head of the political department of the 610th TsBP. According to the assignment, the first training flight was to be a paradrop exercise with an approach under a simulated weather minimum. However, after taking off, commander Polushkin decided not to depart on the assigned route, but to fly a large circuit (the “big box”). Flying in cloud at a speed of 370 km/h, the crew began the first turn at a height of 450 metres, but in the course of it put the aircraft into too steep a left bank of 70°. Going into a stall, the An-12 entered a spin and, descending at a vertical speed of fifty metres per second, struck the ground 5800 metres from Severny airfield and 1100 metres to the left of the extended runway centreline. On impact with the ground the aircraft was completely destroyed and burned, and the entire crew was killed.
