The air crash in Batumi – the crash of an Ilyushin Il-18 aircraft belonging to the Russian Air Force, which occurred on 25 October 2000 near Batumi airport in Georgia. As a result of the crash 84 people were killed (73 passengers and 11 crew members) – everyone on board.
Course of the flight
The aircraft was making a flight from Moscow to Batumi. On board were 45 soldiers and their families, including 7 children. As the aircraft was approaching to land in Batumi, a storm was passing over the city. The pilots were approaching to land from the direction of the Black Sea, but limited visibility caused them to decide to circle the airport and approach to land from the direction of the mountain range. Because of a navigator's error, the aircraft deviated from its course. Unfortunately, the air traffic controller did not notice this fact and did not establish contact with the crew. The Ilyushin crashed into the forested slope of Mount Mtirala at an altitude of 1336 m above sea level. All the people on board were killed in the crash.
