  • Pilot in command › VFR flight into imc, intentional

NTSB narrative

THE PILOT RECEIVED A WEATHER BRIEFING DURING WHICH HE WAS INFORMED THAT IFR CONDITIONS EXISTED ALONG THE PLANNED ROUTE TO AUBURN, NB. WITNESSES REPORTED SEEING THE AIRPLANE FLYING LOW ALONG A HIGHWAY EAST OF THE REPORTED INTENDED DESTINATION AIRSTRIP. THEY REPORTED THE LOCAL WEATHER CONDITIONS AS FOGGY WITH A LIGHT MIST. THE AIRPLANE CRASHED IN A FIELD ABOUT 16 MILES NORTH OF THE INTENDED AIRSTRIP.

Probable cause

THE PILOT'S DECISION TO CONTINUE THE FLIGHT INTO IFR CONDITIONS AND THE FAILURE TO MAINTAIN ADEQUATE ALITTUDE. FACTORS RELATED TO THE ACCIDENT WERE THE PILOT'S OVER CONFIDENCE IN HIS ABILITY AND THE LACK OF INSTRUMENT FLIGHT EXPERIENCE.

  • Unreviewed is an editorial label, not an investigation status. API-sourced is not report-checked or human-reviewed. Explicit event totals are used without summing aircraft injury tables; onboard allocation is withheld. Unknown values remain unknown. The operation category is mapped from the NTSB-reported FAR part and has not been reviewed.
  • Filled from the NTSB case API where the bulk record had no value: local date, investigation status. Values present in the bulk record are kept.
  • The date is the local date; the NTSB stores the UTC date 1989-10-28.
